How to Update Microsoft Office with CMD

Wondering if you can Update MS Office with CMD? Lately, MS Office users have come across this error which mentions there’s a problem with your Office asking you to get it from a genuine source.

This problem usually gets a warning bar notification below the Excel, Powerpoint or Word Menu that mentions to get it authorised. This can be frustrating as you are not allowed to use MS Office products normally. 

There is a simple method to fix this error and update your MS Office using CMD (Command prompt) option in windows.  The steps are as below: 

Step 1: Type CMD in the search bar. You will notice Command prompt icon will appear on the top.

Step 2: Right click on the Command Prompt and Click Run as administrator. (It is important to Run the program as administrator or the changes will not be reflected.)

Step 3: Copy & Paste the first code mentioned below. In the command prompt program.

Code 1:- cd “\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun”

Step 4: Press Enter after pasting the code. Hit Enter on Your Keyboard. It should look like the image below.

Step 5: Copy & Paste the Second Code mentioned below. In the Command prompt program.

Code 2 :- OfficeC2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.13801.20266

Step 6: Press Enter after pasting the code. Hit Enter on Your Keyboard. The checking for update should pop up. It should look like the image below.

Step 7: Wait for process to complete and your Microsoft Office will automatically get Updated to the latest version. 

Step 8: To check the version of your MS Office. Open Word. Click on File option.

Step 9: Go down and Click Account.  On the right hand side you below the About word it will show the build information (ex. Build 13801.20266 Click-to-run).

Step 10: You can match the information with the second code mentioned above. They both should match with same information. 

With this simple method, you can easily Update MS Office with CMD.
